Dyson V15 Detect: Unboxing and Setup
The package is free of plastic
The Dyson V15 Detect arrives in an eco-friendly cardboard box, neatly organized without plastic. Unboxing is quick and easy, allowing for immediate use.
It's advisable to fully charge the unit before first use for optimal battery performance. My V15 Detect started at 35% and took about three hours to reach full charge. You can charge it directly or dock it on the wall mount.
My model was the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute, which includes the Digital Motorbar, Fluffy Optic floorhead, combination tool, crevice tool, and wall dock.
The US version comes with similar attachments, featuring an integrated crevice tool and a hair screw tool for easy hair removal from upholstery.

Dyson V15 Detect: Design and Features
Utilizes 14 cyclones for powerful suction
This vacuum features sensors that detect floor type and dust levels, adjusting suction accordingly. In auto mode, it ramps up power for dirty carpets, while eco mode maintains low suction for lighter cleaning tasks.
A unique green laser highlights dust invisible to the naked eye, setting the V15 Detect apart from competitors by showcasing how effective it truly is.
Equipped with two floorheads—the Digital Motorbar and Fluffy Optic,
the Fluffy Optic is ideal for delicate hard floors, effectively capturing fine dust without scratching surfaces.
The Digital Motorbar floorhead excels on carpets
The versatile Digital Motorbar works on both carpets and hard floors, with its de-tangling bristles making it perfect for tackling pet hair. It features enhanced suction controls and protective bumpers to prevent surface scratches.
Utilizing whole-machine HEPA filtration, it captures 99.97% of allergens and dirt, making it suitable for allergy sufferers.
Tracks vacuumed particles and battery life
Particles are meticulously counted down to their size, helping users identify the dirtiest areas. While not essential, it serves as a reminder that cleaning tasks are complete.
Like many cordless models, the V15 Detect transforms into a handheld vacuum by removing the wand and attaching various tools.
Dyson V15 Detect: User Experience
The laser technology effectively uncovers hidden dust, dramatically improving cleaning efficiency, especially on hard floors. The vacuum's performance leaves no dust behind after a single pass.
Having used the Dyson V12 Detect Slim previously, I noticed the V15's added weight but appreciated its superior power. It can lay nearly flat, allowing for easy access under furniture.
Overall, the V15 Detect stands out as one of the finest vacuums, collecting dirt on the first pass and adjusting suction in under a second. It excels at edge cleaning, with minimal need for the crevice tool.
Minor drawbacks include occasional delays in the brush roll spinning and limited battery life—60 minutes in eco mode, or around 42 minutes on auto mode with standard attachments.
Test 1: Fine Powders
To test its capability, I vacuumed a cup of flour and sugar across different surfaces. This visual test revealed how well the vacuum handles fine particles.
The V15 Detect successfully cleared all flour and sugar in one pass. It effectively avoided pushing debris into crevices, leaving no residue behind.
Even on carpet, it performed admirably, with the vacuum gripping the material tightly due to its suction strength, a feat rare for cordless models.
Test 2: Larger Debris
I assessed its performance with cereal and lentils, common household messes that vary in texture. Many vacuums struggle with these items due to their size and shape.
Using the Fluffy Optic on hard floors, the V15 Detect crushed the cereal and easily collected all pieces, showcasing exceptional cleaning ability.
On carpets, the Digital Motorbar similarly handled the cereal well, with a few lentils escaping but ultimately being picked up.
Test 3: Pet Hair
At a local pet shelter, I tested the V15 Detect on heavy fur and dirt from high traffic areas.
The vacuum managed to clean a thick rug, pulling up all debris without effort. It performed comparably to higher-priced corded models in difficult areas.
After three minutes, it collected over 432 million particles, demonstrating its effectiveness in cleaning pet hair without tangling.

Using the Fluffy Optic on hard floors also proved effective, revealing hidden pet hairs that were successfully vacuumed.
Test 4: Attachments
I evaluated the combination and crevice tools at both the testing center and the pet shelter.
These tools function as expected, with the combination tool serving as both a dusting brush and upholstery cleaner. While effective, I found better results with more specialized attachments.
The crevice tool efficiently pulled in debris from a distance, while the brush picked up fine particles effectively.
If equipped with the hair screw tool, you'll find it one of the best pet hair attachments available.
Dyson V15 Detect: Maintenance
Open the dustbin with a simple lever
Cleaning the V15 Detect is straightforward, allowing for quick disposal of waste with a red lever that empties the dustbin. Stuck debris can be released by pressing it again.
For maintenance, the vacuum disassembles easily, with non-electrical components being washable. Dyson suggests cleaning the post-motor filter monthly for optimal performance.
How Does It Compare?
V15 Detect stands out among tested vacuums
The Dyson V15 Detect consistently ranks high in vacuum reviews. The only model outperforming it is the Dyson Gen5detect, but at a $200 premium for marginally better power, the V15 remains our top recommendation.
While powerful corded vacuums like the Shark POWERDETECT or the Dyson Ball Animal 3 exist, their convenience and ease of use make the V15 Detect an exceptional cordless choice.
At $750, it's an investment, but discounts occasionally drop it to around $450. Alternatively, consider the Dyson V12 Detect Slim for $100 less, which shares nearly all features, or the Shark PowerDetect for under $400, which, while not as powerful, remains a strong contender.
Should You Purchase the Dyson V15 Detect?
Fluffy Optic floorhead illuminates hidden dust
If it's within your budget, absolutely. The advanced technology in this vacuum has significantly eased my cleaning routine, ensuring no mess is left behind. Its ability to pick up everything in one pass is truly impressive.
However, $750 is a substantial amount. If it's too steep, consider waiting for discounts or exploring refurbished options.
