Ananth Ramaswamy, our Next in Design 2025 winner, never intended to become an interior designer. After relocating from Bangalore to the U.K., he found his true calling. 'I initially pursued architecture for seven rigorous years, but it was the world of interiors that truly captivated me,' Ananth shares.
His journey began at an architecture firm, Michaelis Boyd, where he contributed to apartment designs at Battersea Power Station and various décor projects for hotel chains. This experience led him to establish Arall in 2022, focusing on private residential designs.

'My architectural background instills a meticulous approach to interiors,' Ananth states, emphasizing his commitment to detail during a recent project that required 100% natural, no-VOC materials. 'I even scrutinized the glue used for wallpapers!' he adds.
Having just wrapped up a project in Wanstead, he aims to promote inclusivity within the design sector. 'Arriving in a new country without a network made it challenging to land my first job,' he reflects. 'Often, I was the only person of color in the room, but I've gained the confidence to advocate for my place and showcase the richness of Indian craftsmanship.'
Three Essential Design Insights from Arall
1. Blending Old with New
I love integrating vintage finds with modern pieces that resonate with my clients. This mix creates character and a sense of lived-in warmth in every space I design.
2. Understanding Proportion
Proportion is an art form that contributes to room balance. I start with the structural elements—the baseboards, cornice size, shelf thickness, and architrave scale—ensuring all furnishings are proportionate. This attention to detail fosters balance and permanence, which are vital yet often overlooked.
3. Embrace Flexibility
Life is in constant flux, and so should your home be adaptable to your evolving needs. Overthinking can hinder organic decision-making. Trusting your intuition leads to more authentic choices. Everyone has that intuitive sense; it just needs to be recognized and embraced.
