"Porcelain is an excellent material for outdoor use, just as it is for kitchens and bathrooms," says Hamish.
These tiles repel water, preventing cracks during frost and making them perfect for gardens.
One of the major benefits of porcelain tiles is their low upkeep. "They maintain their appearance with minimal care," Hamish states. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with a suitable cleaner is all that's needed.
Porcelain tiles can mimic the look of natural stone, allowing you to enjoy an easy-care surface without sacrificing aesthetics.
In sunny areas, choose lighter-colored porcelain to reflect heat rather than darker shades that absorb it.
2. Create a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow
Porcelain is a fantastic option for linking indoor spaces to outdoor areas. Using the same tiles in both a kitchen and patio extends the visual space.
Seek porcelain collections that offer both indoor and outdoor varieties. "This creates a cohesive aesthetic," Hamish suggests.

Tile patterns aren’t just for indoors. "You can find patterned porcelain tiles to enliven garden areas," Hamish explains.

4. Choose Natural Stone Tiles
A wide variety of stone tiles, including limestone, sandstone, and slate, can enhance patios, pathways, and courtyards. They provide the unique charm of natural materials.
When selecting natural stone, consider the color carefully. “Your choice should reflect both personal taste and lifestyle,” Hamish advises. “I prefer a limestone that isn’t too white to avoid glare. A tumbled finish adds character.”
Not all stones are suitable for outdoor use. Always select frost-resistant stone with good slip resistance, just as you would with porcelain.
Mix tiles from different boxes when installing natural stone to ensure an even tonal blend across the surface.
5. Caring for Outdoor Tiles
Stone requires special installation and maintenance to keep it looking great.
“All natural stone tiles must be sealed before and after grouting,” says Hamish. “We recommend a water-based impregnating sealer suitable for outdoor use. Resealing annually is also a good practice.”
Porcelain does not require sealing.
