TT Interview

From the top left, we have Merrilee Davis, the adventurous solo traveler; the McGuinness family, who dedicated a year to exploring the globe; Jessie Beck, a Peace Corps volunteer in Madagascar; and Kaleena Quarrels, who taught English in Korea.

The most rewarding aspect of my travels is the incredible people I encounter.

I've often felt like an outsider. In my early years, I was the girl with glasses and braces. When I embraced solo travel during college, that feeling intensified. Many viewed my decision as unusual. Yet, upon studying abroad in England, I discovered others on similar solo journeys! They also chose not to wait around for others to join them in travel. There were moments where I connected with strangers in just 15 minutes, on a level I hadn't experienced with friends from home. These fellow travelers got me in ways only another wanderer could understand. I didn't need to explain my motivations for traveling, the sacrifices made, or why I felt restless when staying in one place. We had shared dreams and challenges. Those encounters blossomed into lasting friendships.

Last year, I met the Traveling Granny in Colombia—a remarkable 68-year-old from Vancouver who travels solo. In a hostel in Surce, Bolivia, I met a British family who sold their home to embark on a year-long adventure. From Peace Corps volunteers to English teachers in Korea to digital nomads and couchsurfing enthusiasts, I've met individuals who prioritize adventure above all. Their courage has both inspired and challenged me.

As a journalist, I feel compelled to share these stories. After months of outreach, I'm excited to announce the launch of my Travel Tuesday Interview Series next week! This series will feature conversations with inspiring travelers from around the globe. Each will share their experiences, challenges, and packing tips.

Remember, you're not alone in your desire to explore the world. I hope these stories inspire you to make travel a priority. You can do it! ?
