From cozy living rooms in rich browns to serene bedrooms in soft pinks, hue drenching highlights one color and its various shades to create a stunning effect.
While this color technique may seem similar to the popular 'color drenching', it offers more subtlety and can produce more dynamic spaces. Instead of saturating a room with one color, hue drenching incorporates a spectrum of tones, from light to dark, through decor, furnishings, and wall paint.
It creates an enveloping atmosphere, building around a single shade to offer richness and luxury without being overwhelming or overly matched. Here's how designers are expertly using one color in 2026 to craft layered settings with various hues.

This all-brown living room, layered in earthy tones, is anything but monotonous.
Hue drenching transcends simple paint ideas; it's about how far you can take it. Layering warm brown cushions on a chocolate sofa or coordinating your rug with the wallpaper fosters a look that seeks commonality rather than strict coordination.
According to interior designer Caroline Riddell, 'Hue drenching reflects a traditional aesthetic, making it suitable for both modern and classic interiors. It's a timeless approach!'
Referring to the brown living room shown, Caroline adds, 'We collaborated closely with our client to establish a sophisticated yet intimate feel. By utilizing various shades of brown and materials like grass cloth and mohair, we created interest while maintaining a cohesive palette. This color brings warmth and depth to a north-facing room.'
'Using different tones of the same color calms the environment while allowing for unique patterns and accents,' Caroline explains. 'For instance, the exquisite Vanderhurd rug we selected harmonizes with the brown tones, enhancing the geometric design and grounding the space. Hue drenching serves as a perfect backdrop for bold furniture or art pieces.'

This peaceful bedroom features a range of soft pinks, creating a romantic and tranquil vibe.
'Hue drenching involves interpreting a color across all elements, showcasing its variations,' says interior designer Uns Hobbs. 'It literally envelops you in the space and is a trend that will endure because it offers depth beyond one flat color. It feels intentional and immersive when executed effectively.'
When designing a pink bedroom, Uns combined shades from the warm side of the spectrum. 'Our client adores pink, so it was essential to make it the focal point. We intentionally used a gradient from peach to pale pink and even to crimson, allowing the light to interact beautifully among the shades without overwhelming the senses.'
While a plaster pink paint, similar to Farrow & Ball's Setting Plaster, establishes the room's mood, hue drenching can also be subtly introduced through bedding, furniture, or smaller decor. 'This layering allows the crimson to stand out, while the peach embraces you, and the mid-pinks create harmony. They complement each other perfectly,' Uns remarks.
'Working within a single color family creates a beautifully tonal space while still achieving contrast and visual intrigue,' Uns continues. 'This approach fosters serenity, making it ideal for bedrooms where a calm, cocooning atmosphere is desired.'

In this vibrant galley kitchen, a palette of greens comes together beautifully.
'Trends may evolve, but the concept of using a single color to create a warm, inviting space is timeless,' shares interior designer Sara Leonor. 'It might shift to softer tones over time, but the essence remains.'
This galley kitchen showcases a lively array of greens, a bold choice for a compact area, yet the hue drenching method makes it work beautifully. 'Our client specifically requested green metro tiles for the splashback,' says Sara. 'As we sketched and sampled, we found that utilizing various green shades along with black-and-white tiles made the space feel cozier and more inviting.'
'Mixing different colors can often lead to chaos, while working with shades of the same hue fosters a more relaxed, cohesive appearance,' Sara adds.

This striking blue living room designed by Katie Ridder highlights the beauty of blue.
This lively blue space, crafted by Katie Ridder, demonstrates how blue can be just as elegant as any neutral.
'Facing a lake, this design brings the outdoors in with sophistication,' she explains. 'Using various shades of blue helps unify the space, softening its architectural details.'
'Hue drenching allows for a sophisticated color integration without overwhelming the room. It fosters intimacy and warmth,' Katie points out. 'This technique helps mask unwanted features and can introduce color gently for those who may be hesitant. It's calming and refined when done correctly.'
While color drenching remains popular, hue drenching offers a more layered and subtle approach to utilizing a single color. It can feel both bold and gentle, depending on your color choice.
